The party confronted Vernin Aldrith outside Scardale City Hall where Emmit's charm person spell failed, Vernin's eyes flashing green to reveal the influence of Iyachtu Xvim. Instead of attacking, Vernin introduced his lieutenants—Scar, Thorn, and Brand—and mentioned his upcoming "Night of Agony" party. Afterwards, Yellarus Springbell joined the group back at The Sleeping Lion inn along with her acquaintance, Nyra Echoweave, who informed the heroes of a presence in the Ethereal realm that was frightening the spirits. Mr. Jingles later received an invitation to join Vernin for dinner that evening. With a heavy heart, Zera left the group to answer a calling from Milil, the Lord of Song.

Leaving Scardale, Jasper and Nyra traveled north to The Cold Field to seek out a spirit willing to help them investigate. After fighting ancient and long forgotten soldiers, a fighter named River agreed to assist. Meanwhile, Mr. Jingles and Galadrathril dined with Vernin at his manor where they were poisoned and taken captive. Emmit, having waited outside, attempted to enter Vernin's manor some time later but was stopped by security. As the night passed, Emmit returned to the inn to deliver her findings while Nyra communed with the local spirits to discern Mr. Jingles' fate. Determining that their friends were in danger, Emmit and Jasper left to go mount a rescue.
